There are a few things you *need* to be an effective warrior, but before we get to that, we need you to give us an idea as to what your stats are like.

Here are some general guidelines:

1. You need some sort of increased attack speed skill. Flail and frenzy are 2 common ones.

2. You need some solid attack skills, preferable a good mix of adrenaline and energy ones, leaning more to the adrenaline side of things.

3. You need some way to keep yourself standing. Unless you're teaming w/ a monk you trust, you'll want a way to heal yourself. Depending on what your secondary profession and stats are like, you can go w/ healing signet, lion's comfort, or any number of secondary profession healing skills/spells.

4. Good armor is one thing, but what about the runes & insignias on that armor? Too many major or superior runes drop your health and it can really hurt your survival.

5. What sort of weapon are you wielding and what are its stats? Are you using a sword & shield, axe & shield, or a hammer?

6. Are you properly equipped to deal w/ the enemies you'll be facing? Do you have hex removal for hex-heavy areas? What about condition removal for enemies that apply lots of conditions on you? Being prepared is a big part of it

Follow Jedi's link to the Warrior section of the campfire, and have a look at the stickies. Generally, you can make a template for warrior bars as follows:
Elite attack skill, attack skill, attack skill, snare or run buff, IAS skill, Res skill, and 2 optional slots for utility.

edit: By stickies, I mean Marty's thread. It is really quite excellent. I also like strider's thread back in the day, titled "building a better warrior" or somesuch. Try a search for that, if you wish.

The axe v sword debate is as old as time itself.
I prefer axes, some people prefer swords. There is no clear "better" as it is very much an opinion.

I personally just think swords look more balanced, gives my warrior a cirtain poise. Doesn't make the skills better but looks good

All of the non-farming builds I looked at were crap. Maybe the farming ones are too, I didn't look at them.

That's a good part of you problem. You should at least have a Minor Swordsmanship/Axe Mastery/Hammer Mastery (whichever you use) and a Minor Strength, a Major Vigor, and a Superior Absorption rune. The insignias would vary depending upon your build, but if nothing else, you should have Survivor insignias on each armor piece.

Wrong! Pie is obviously superior to cake!

...And that's really the whole gist of the argument. Both are awesome, choose what looks cooler. That's really what it comes down to. Don't like it? Np! Just respec.

Wow.
Some of them builds are truly epic.

I have seen the light. Rangers with Power Shot and Shard Storm are the future, people!

Seriously... Don't use any of them builds. Ever.
Unless you want Koss and Alesia to laugh at you.

for starters I suggest the following principles for your warrior:

Sword:
-sever artery+gash is a must in every non crip slash(which lets you skip the sever artery part, but keep gash) sword build as its the only way swords can inflict deep wound.
-crip slash or dragon slash as your elite
-1 other attack skill 2(is optional if using crip slash)

Axe:
-Eviscerate as your elite, hands down... if you insist on not using Eviscerate than you need disember for the deep wound.
-2 or 3 other attack skills

Hammer:
-Backbreaker or Devastating Hammer as your elite
-Crushing blow is a must for the deep wound
-1 or 2 other attack skills, heavy blow and perhaps fierce blow too if using Devastating Hammer to complete the chain. you're free to choose if using Backbreaker

now that we've covered the offensive side, which varies between the weapons we go to the utility/defensive side which is the same whichever weapon you choose:

-utility, if you left room for it. anything from bull's strike/protector's strike to watch yourself/shields up. choose wisely here
-IAS, frenzy/flail are the most common options
-speed boost, sprint/rush/enraging charge are the most common options
-self heal, heal sig/lion's comfort are the most common options
-res, either sig or hard res(from secondary)

note on seconary professions:

secondary professions should be used wisely, 1 or 2 skills at most from them, 3 in very rare cases. remember that going pure warrior is also fine, you dont really need the secondary, its just helpful...
the skills from your secondary will be the: speed boost/IAS/utility/self heal/hard res
some examples of warrior bars using secondary professions:
Shock Axe- Eviscerate, Executioner's Strike, Bull's Strike, Shock, Frenzy, Rush, Conjure Lightning, Res Sig
Rending Axe- Eviscerate, Executioner's, Agonizing Chop, Bull's Strike, Frenzy, Pious Haste, Rending Touch, Res Sig
Shock Hammer- Backbreaker, Crushing Blow, Heavy Blow, Shock, Flail, Rush, Conjure Lightning, Res Sig
Fiery Dragon- Sever Artery, Gash, Dragon Slash, Sun and Moon Slash, Frenzy, Rush, Conjure Flame, Res Sig

notice that all the above examples lack a self heal. this is because those builds are more utility based to focus on the Warrior's strengths instead of minimizing its weaknesses. however those builds should only be used in organized PvP where you can count on your monks and other team mates for healing and support.
